I’ve noticed an interesting pattern: when a cold comes on, holding either the ring finger or the index finger often helps calm a cough. But not always in the same way. Sometimes one works, while other times only the other brings relief.
So what is the difference?
Lumbar Circle and the Interplay of Elements
If I had to guess, the ring finger may be more helpful during the early stages of the cold, while the index finger would be more appropriate later. My guess is based on the lumbar circle that shows how elements interact with each other.

In the early stages, the Lung FE is the first to feel the blockage, and holding the 2nd Depth ring finger directly boosts the Lung FE.
Later on, however, if things have developed, there must have been underlying disharmonies, and they will most likely come from the 4th Depth, which overloads the 2nd Depth. Holding the index finger, keeping Kidney and Bladder FE in harmony, is probably helping with that overload.
But there is also another, more direct relation between Kidney FE and coughing congestion.
Kidney FE Pathway
Have you looked at the Kidney FE pathway?
The Kidney FE travels directly through the physical organ of the lung and upward through the respiratory paths, throat, and nose. Remember – if you see deep vertical skin lines above the nose – it is an indicator of Kidney FE stress.
So, holding the index finger and helping Kidney FE appears to to work both on a deeper (through the lumbar circle) and more superficial level (through direct pathway) than the ring finger—Lung FE.
You can see how profound harmonizing Kidney FE can be for long-standing cough in this article from June 2018.
Do you have any observations on the fingers? Or other flows that help for coughing symptoms?
