No. | Left | Right | The Story |
1 | Left hand on the left little toe Right hand on Left deep 6 (Bubbling Well) | Right hand on the right little toe Left hand on the right deep 6 (Bubbling Well) | Not to be confused with No.5, even though as a self-help the the two sequences are indistinguishable except for your intent. It helps directly 1st (SEL 6) and 4th depth (little toe) projects. |
2. | Place your hands on the calves – left hand on left side and right on right. | Cross your hands and place them on the calves – left hand on the right side and right on the left. | It helps 2nd depth projects and particularly the skin. |
3. | Place your hands on the back of the knees – left hand on the left side and right on right. | Cross your hands and place them at the back of the knees – left hand on the right side and right on the left. | Helps muscle projects (4th depth). In relation to 4th depth – it helps with reproduction and chemicals/toxins projects. |
4. | “Expand the Front” Cross your hands and hold the ball of your feet – left hand wraps around right foot and righ hand around left. | “To Expand the Back” Hold the ball of your feet – left hand wraps around left foot and right around the right. | If tension is in the front, use the “expand the front” side to alleviate it. If the tension is in the back, use the “expand the back” side. Helpful in heart emergencies while waiting for the medical help to arrive. |
5. | Left hand on the left 6 Right hand on the left little toe | Right hand on the right 6 Left hand on the right little toe | “Moving Order of Disharmony” is a sequence useful for when symptoms pop in and out at random places. Use to harmonize 1st depth. I’ve used it in the afternoon after lunch when digestion made me drowsy. |
6. | Left hand on the left sitbone Right hand along the left neck/shoulder | Right hand on the right sitbone Left hand along the right neck/shoulder | Special Body Function 1. Use it to help any 1st depth projects. Helps directly Diaphragm Function Energy and Descending Energy. |
7. | Left hand on the left low 8 Right hand on the left 16 | Right hand on the right low 8 Left hand on the right 16 | Special Body Function 2. Use to help any 2nd depth projects. Helps directly Gall Bladder Function Energy. Helps feet projects. |
8. | Right hand on the left 5 Left hand on the left 16 | Left hand on the right 5 Right hand on the right 16 | Special Body Function 3. Helps 3rd depth projects. |
9. | Place our hands on the outside knees (8s) – left hand on the left side and right on the right. | Place our hands on the outside knees (8s) – left hand on the left side and right on the right. | Special Body Function 4. Helps 4th depths projects. It helps when we feel too hot or too cold. |
10 | Left hand on the left shoulder Right hand on the left elbow thumbside (19) | Right hand on the right shoulder Left hand on the right elbow thumb-side (19) | Special Body Function 5. Helps 5th depth projects. |
11 | Make a fist with the left hand (fingertips touch base of the thumb) Right hand on the left shoulder | Make a fist with the right hand (fingertips touch base of the thumb) Left Hand on the right shoulder | Thumb Function Energy. Helps 2nd depth projects. It also directly harmonizes Lung and Large Intestine Function Energy. |
12 | Make a circle by placing the left thumb over the left ring (Mudra No6) fingernail Right hand on the left shoulder blade | Make a circle by placing the right thumb over the right ring fingernail (Mudra No6) Left hand on the right shoulder blade. | Little Finger Function Energy. Helps 5th depth projects. This helps directly the harmonious flow of Heart and Small Intestine Function Energy. |
Further Commentary
Sequence No. 5
I used it to help me stay alert after lunch. The difference between sequences No. 1 and 6 is the order of our hands. For self-help purposes, I doubt there is much difference, however. I like to apply them as they feel comfortable.
Sequence No. 7
This hold is a quickie/ self-help for opening the SEL 9. The 9’s can be hard to reach on oneself so holding Lo 8 and 16 is a good alternative. And just as the 9s are all about feet, the Special Body Function (2) helps all feet projects. I met a person once who claimed this sequence helped them with stopping the sense of nausea.
Mary Burmeister herself includes both applications [T2, p. 51] among several others. According to Wayne Hackett, it is especially good for chronic pain in the neck and helps opposite teeth and gums. Iole Lebensztajn offered it as a quickie for the Gall Bladder Function Energy.
Sequence No. 8
*Note. The sequence above is for self-help purposes. When applied to someone else, the sequence is modified so that the right hand always goes on SEL 5 and the left hand goes on SEL 16 regardless of the side.
Some of the symptoms that this sequence may relieve [T2, p. 52] are joint discomfort, rheumatism, and stiffness. In fact, Wayne Hackett says that this flow helps lubricate the body and helps us be limber. In light of all that, I tried an interesting experiment once during my Yoga practice. If you are like me and struggle to complete the Paschimottanasana, try holding your ankles with your hands rather than the toes. If you place your stretched fingers on both sides of each ankle, you will naturally reach SELs 5 and 6 on each ankle. When I tried that, it felt much easier for me to hold that yoga posture than usual.
Another personal experience with this sequence is related to a head cold that I had once. By the second day, I was feeling stiff all over my body from lying too much on the couch. I used Special Body Function Energy (3) to help me with the illness-induced stiffness and aching.
Sequence No. 9
The disharmonies listed by M. Burmeister [T2, p. 53] are hip imbalance, stagnation of energy on one side of the body causing that shoulder to become higher or lower.
There are several flows that call for holding the eights with slight variations. The flow that calls for holding the center back of the knee is actually the harmonizing flow for the Right Diagonal Muscular Energy given in Text 2, page 46 which helps muscle regeneration. If you need to build new muscles, you will have to hold the Shifted 8s but with fingers pointing towards the feet (you sit facing the feet). Here is a summary of the variations in holding the area of the SELs 8 and how they help.
Sequences 11 and 12
Pair sequences 11 and 12 for a complete hour-long JSJ treatment for complete revitalization. I did exactly that for a person who had been in an accident and couldn’t move much while recovering. I didn’t want to disturb their resting, so holding the shoulder with the thumb, and later the outer wrist was sufficient. Note that Sequence 12 is really about shoulder and outer wrist, but it’s hard to do so on oneself – therefore the modification here as shoulder and wring with thumb over ring finger (which opens SEL 17)
SELs 8 and Sequences 3 and 9
Name | Reference | Hold | Helps |
Special Body (4) | T2, p. 54 | Both 8s Lateral (side) | Structural symmetry of the body |
Left Diagonal Muscular | T2, p. 46 | Both 8s Medial (center back) for Left Flow | Chemical Balance |
Deep Skin Descending | T2, p. 45 | Right on Left calf, Left on Right calf for Left Flow | “Plastic Surgeon” |
Both sequences 3 and 9 are highly symmetrical. Sequence 9 is known as Special Body Function Energy (4) and can be used when you notice asymmetries in the body—for example, one shoulder or hip sitting higher than the other. Sequence 3, called Diagonal Muscle Function Energy, is more appropriate when the imbalance is related to the muscles.
SBFE (4) supports the same-side hip and the opposite shoulder, neck, and eye. My 95-year-old grandmother confirmed this shoulder relief firsthand after I suggested she hold her 8s to ease hip tension. After several weeks, she happily reported that her shoulders felt relaxed and even.
I have also used SBFE (4) to regulate temperature. Once, while sitting in an over-air-conditioned room before a presentation, I began shivering. Holding both 8s brought relief within five minutes. Interestingly, I didn’t feel warmer—just unaffected by the cold. More recently, I used the same hold in a sauna to help my body adjust to the heat.
My discomforts are usually abdominal rather than gastric, but once after dinner I experienced a dull ache in my stomach. Holding both 8s in the SBFE (4) position eased the discomfort within minutes. I still don’t know exactly how it worked—only that it did.
Sequence No. 10
It relates and helps the 5th Depth and any 5-Depth projects. Helpful for arthritis and discomfort of joints. It’s a great Self-help sequence for daily aches and pain in the arm/elbow area
The disharmonies listed by M. Burmeister [T2, p. 54] are stagnation and hardening of joints from daily body fatigue function intermingling into the 12-fold body energy. This is due to body function energy unable to circulate freely through joints.
My friend Marie-Reine told me she used this flow to help her with some calcification issues. She got the inspiration to use this sequence from Wayne Hackett during one of his seminars in the Baltimore/Washington area. Apparently, I attended that seminar as well, but strangely had no memory of him talking about that. It’s always curious how each one of us remembers differently one and the same event!
Sequence No. 11
This sequence, known as the Thumb Function Energy, is described in Mary Burmeister’s Textbook 2, page 56. It addresses disharmony caused by the intermingling of the Lung and Large Intestine Function Energy. Many of the resulting symptoms overlap with those of colds and flus, as well as with some side effects of the vaccines designed to protect us from those illnesses. To help minimize such effects, I once gave this flow for 30 minutes to someone who had just received their first COVID vaccine. This is how you can “have your cake and eat it too.” 🙂
