Pathway

At 6 p.m., at the tip of the little toe, Bladder Function Energy becomes Kidney Function Energy. It flows diagonally across the sole of the foot, wraps around the inner ankle, and ascends along the innermost side of the lower leg and thigh until it reaches the rectum. At the coccyx, it crosses to the opposite side of the body and travels along the back and front of the reproductive organs. From there, it continues along the pubic bone, lower abdomen, and umbilicus. It then flows upward into the opposite kidney, downward through the bladder, and upward again to the liver and the lung, where it divides into two branches [TH, p.118].

Part A ascends through the throat and separates once more at the root of the tongue. One branch disperses there, while the other continues upward along the side of the nose, over the forehead and crown, and then descends down the back. This flow travels about half an inch from the spine, descending all the way to the coccyx, where it emerges at the front groin area and scatters.

Part B moves from the lung through the area of the third front rib into the heart and diaphragm, where, at 8 p.m., it becomes Diaphragm Function Energy.

Kidney – Scorpio Connection

Being the eighth in the twelvefold Body Function Energy, Kidney Function Energy corresponds to Scorpio, the eighth sign in the Western astrological tradition. Kidney/Scorpio helps us overcome fear through the power of transformation—the ability to raise anything from a lower to a higher state of existence.

Vertical Lines above the Nose (Kidney FE strain)

As a toe flow, Kidney Function Energy crosses to the opposite side of the body at the pubic area. The left little toe Kidney Function Energy flows into the right reproductive organ and the right kidney, eventually emerging along the right side of the nose. Vertical lines above the nose may indicate Kidney Function Energy disharmony. A prominent vertical line on the right side of the nose ridge corresponds to the left little toe Kidney Function Energy. The right-little-toe pathway mirrors the left.

Coughing and Wheezing

“Right hand controls kidneys. It absorbs Lung Function Energy, chases Liver Function Energy, and causes disharmony” [T2, p.4]. Kidney Function Energy flows directly into the lung organ: “…ascends to eighth rib costal cartilage into liver into pylorus, up to fourth rib into lung and separates into two…” [T2, p.26].

Five Elements (Lumbar Circle)

When I develop a cough after a head cold, holding my ring finger or harmonizing Lung Function Energy usually helps. In fact, I often do it preemptively to prevent that lingering post-cold cough altogether. But once, when the cough persisted for many weeks and neither the ring finger hold nor the Lung FE sequence brought relief, it was the harmonizing sequence for Kidney Function Energy that finally helped.

As soon as my husband assisted with the anchor step—holding the little toe and the center of the sole—I felt a wave of warmth rising from my lungs toward my face. It was deeply pleasant, and the relief from coughing was immediate.

Why did Kidney Function Energy help when the Lung and ring finger (2nd Depth) did not?

The answer lies in the Five Element theory, which is built into the JSJ Lumbar Circle.

In the Five Element system, Metal (Lung Function Energy) generates Water (Kidney Function Energy), which in turn generates Wood (Liver Function Energy). The ascending aspect of Fire (Heart Function Energy) energizes Kidney, while Earth (Spleen Function Energy) contains it.

When Kidney Function Energy becomes dis-harmonized, it can disrupt the energetic exchange between Lung and Kidney, creating an overload in the Lung Function Energy. This imbalance can manifest as congestion, coughing, or wheezing. Alternatively, when Liver (3rd Depth) is out of harmony, it may block Kidney from transforming into it. In pulse listening, this may appear as symptoms along the right ring finger (effect) showing the “fluffy” texture of the 3rd Depth (cause).

Groin and Reproductive Areas

Kidney Function Energy flows directly through the groin and reproductive area and governs their proper functioning. In both JSJ and Western astrology, Kidney corresponds to Scorpio, ruler of the reproductive system. Because of that connection, I practiced the Kidney harmonizing sequence frequently after giving birth to my daughter. It helped me recover quickly and gently from the physical trauma of childbirth.

Throat

Diametrically opposite to Scorpio is Taurus, the second zodiacal sign, which rules the throat. The two signs are polar opposites yet complement each other—two faces of one coin. One branch of Kidney Function Energy flows directly through the throat [T2, p.26, 2c1]. The list of Kidney disharmonies due to overload includes dry throat and related discomforts [T2, p.26, 4b].

Sneezing and Nose Bleeding

The fastest way to stop a sneezing spell for me is to apply the Kidney flow. Of course, it is not always practical to stop what I am doing and hold my little toe and the center of the sole. Once, when sneezing started on the freeway while I was driving, I discovered that holding SEL 17 also helped stop it. It just took longer. While the Kidney flow can relax me and end the sneezing within two to three minutes, holding SEL 17 took about five to ten. Still, it was far better than the alternative.

Kidney Function Energy and Animal-Based Food

“When animal matter is partaken in large quantities, Kidney Function Energy separates into Blood Energy and Oxygen Compressed Energy.” [TII, p.39]

Kidney Function Energy breaks down animal matter taken into the body. Its strength determines how much animal food one can comfortably consume. A strong Kidney Function Energy can handle moderate amounts of animal food without difficulty. A weakened Kidney Function Energy, however, may be overwhelmed even by small portions.

Because Kidney Function Energy is responsible for clearing body toxins, it is important not to overtax it during illness by consuming animal products. Naturally, when we are unwell, the body shows an aversion to such foods—a protective response that aligns with the wisdom of Kidney Function Energy.
